CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Shen Qingqiu (born Shen Yuan)
Age: Mentally ~30 (age is never given); physically somewhere in his 20's
Canon: The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Canon Point: Immediately post ch. 43 (self-detonation)
Character Information: Despite being the main character, Shen Qingqiu's wiki page is pretty sparse so I'll try to do a better summary here.
  • SVSSS begins in modern day China, where pampered second-generation nerdlord Shen Yuan spends most of his days critiquing trashy online novels. The worst of these is Proud Immortal Demon's Way (henceforth shortened to PIDW), a stallion harem novel starring Luo Binghe, an OP blackened protagonist who gathers 600+ wives and gets revenge on all who's crossed him. Out of all the villains the protagonist faces, the scummiest by far is his former teacher Shen Qingqiu (born Shen Jiu). In the story, Shen Qingqiu violently abuses and torments Binghe throughout his teenage years, culminating in shoving him down the Endless Abyss (basically a hell full of demons) after discovering his half-demon bloodline. After leveling up and finding a way out of the Abyss, Luo Binghe proceeds to enact bloody revenge by turning Shen Qingqiu into a human stick (ie chopping all of his limbs off and cutting out his tongue while still leaving him alive).
  • After finishing the novel, Shen Yuan is so upset about the terrible writing and ending that he literally dies mad about it from eating expired food. He then wakes up in the world of PIDW in the body of scum villain Shen Qingqiu, with a 14 year old Luo Binghe having already been his disciple for a year. His initial plan of sucking up to the protagonist so he won't be horribly tortured is immediately derailed thanks to the presence of the system, an AI in his head that grants and deducts points based on his actions. If his point value goes below 0, he'll be ejected back into his corpse back in the modern world...and unfortunately, not pushing Binghe down the Endless Abyss means a loss of all of his points. Initially the system also deducts points from him for being OOC, so he's forced to be subtle in supporting Binghe while still keeping up the persona of being cruel and uncaring.
  • After successfully protecting Binghe during a mission and gaining his favor, the system disables the OOC function, allowing Shen Qingqiu to act how he wants within limitations. Shen Qingqiu immediately takes advantage of this by trying to fix all of the sabotage and bullying towards Binghe than the original goods allowed. He also saves Liu Qingge - originally a high-tier cannon fodder character who was literally too cool to live - from dying by qi deviation.
  • A few months after his arrival, Qing Jing peak is invaded by the demoness Sha Hualing and her army. After a couple of one-on-one fights, the system forces Shen Qingqiu to send Luo Binghe out to fight against the last demon. Thanks to his teacher's faith in him, Binghe scores a victory, but his opponent attempts to attack him while his back is turned. Shen Qingqiu shoves him out of the way and winds up taking a blow where he's poisoned by Without a Cure (your daily reminder that PIDW is a terrible book). Liu Qingge shows up in time to save the day, but Shen Qingqiu now has to deal with a poison permanently in his veins that could prevent him from using his cultivation powers at any moment.
  • Soon after, Luo Binghe finds out about his demonic heritage after being drawn into a dreamscape that Shen Qingqiu helps him through. He keeps this a secret from his teacher (who already knows thanks to having read PIDW but pretends he doesn't). Shen Qingqiu tells him that no one is born evil and that demons have just as much potential to be good as humans do. This will in no way come back to majorly bite him on the ass in the future.
  • Three years pass where Shen Qingqiu mostly lounges around teaching his students and spoiling the shit out of Binghe. The Immortal Alliance Conference (basically a monster hunting tournament for disciples from all sects) starts. Due to sabotage, extremely high level monsters and demons invade, killing a whole bunch of disciples. Binghe's demon blood is awakened in front of Shen Qingqiu and the Endless Abyss opens. The system forces Shen Qingqiu to follow the events of the original plot; Shen Qingqiu stabs Binghe and then shoves him down the abyss, knowing that he'll survive and be back in five years to enact bloody revenge.
  • There's another three year timeskip where Shen Qingqiu wanders around the countryside in denial over how much he's grieving Binghe's loss. During this time, he finds out that fellow peak lord Shang Qinghua is also a transmigrator and is in fact the author of PIDW. The two of them concoct a plan where they grow a plant body that Shen Qingqiu's soul can escape to should he ever die in his current body.
  • Shen Qingqiu, Liu Qingge, and Mu Qingfang are sent to Jinlan city to investigate a plague. The city is under the protection of Cang Qiong sect's rival, the Huan Hua sect. They discover that the plague is being caused by sower demons, which spreads rot in anyone they infect. Shen Qingqiu is infected by a sower. Even worse, he finds out that Luo Binghe has escaped the Abyss two years early and is now acting as the lead disciple of the Huan Hua sect.
  • Turns out the entire situation is pretty much a set up to drag Shen Qingqiu's and thus Cang Qiong's reputation through the mud. He's accused of a bunch of crimes he didn't actually commit, but lack of evidence as well as Shen Jiu's previous behavior means that most of the people outside of Cang Qiong are against him. To prevent his fellow peak lords from getting into a fight over him, he surrenders and allows himself to be imprisoned. Luo Binghe visits him searching for answers. Loads of misunderstandings ensue.
  • Shen Qingqiu receives information from Shang Qinghua that the plant body is ready and that he needs to enter it soon or else it'll rot. He decides to make his escape from the prison. Luo Binghe chases him down. More miscommunication happens, enraging Binghe to the point where his demonic sword Xin Mo starts taking over his mind. To dispel the possession, Shen Qingqiu detonates his golden core and self-destructs in an attempt to save Binghe's sanity.

Personality: As the head of the scholar's peak of the most powerful cultivation sect in the world, Shen Qingqiu exemplifies poise and eloquent grace. He carries himself with dignity, always keeping his composure no matter the circumstances. Despite his gentle demeanor, he can come off as distant and aloof at times as his generally calm expression makes it difficult to discern what he's thinking. With his unflappable disposition and tendency to deflect any personal questions, many of his disciples and fellow peak lords find themselves wondering what exactly's going through his mind as he gazes thoughtfully into the distance.

The answer, if they could hear it, would probably be something along the lines of 'ahhhh fuck fuck fuck what the fuck am I doing stupid system shitty novel I'm gonna die soon fuck my life!!!'

Yes, unbeknowendst to the rest of Cang Qiong sect, the real Shen Qingqiu is actually a stressed-out millennial trapped in the body of a character he hates and desperately trying to survive without alerting everyone that he clearly doesn't belong in this world - no easy feat, seeing as how his internal dialogue tends to vary between bitingly sarcastic commentary and screaming panic. Luckily, he possesses two valuable skills to help him out: a phenomenal poker face and and the ability to quickly adapt to most situations. No matter how much he's cursing or rolling his eyes in his head, Shen Qingqiu's able to maintain a cool and collected air in public. As for adaptability, it takes him about two seconds to accept that he's transmigrated into a different world and immediately throw himself into his role without bothering to ask any stupid questions like 'who are you?' and 'where am I?'. It doesn't take him long at all to integrate into an ancient Chinese xianxia setting despite being from the normal modern-day world; in fact, he's usually more formal than many of the people he meets. He's also quick to roll with the punches and bullshit plans on the fly, rarely letting it show how of depth he truly feels.

Unfortunately, these two strengths also combine into what arguably causes Shen Qingqiu most of the problems in his life - his truly spectacular ability to cause miscommunications across the board. His automatic response of covering up any distress he feels with either his fan or a blank poker face means that it's difficult for others to gauge what he's actually thinking, leaving them with the impression that he doesn't care when it's usually the opposite. Even worse, he rarely speaks up to correct these assumptions or defend himself. Part of that is because he finds it awkward and embarrassing to express vulnerability, and part of it is because he's afraid that speaking will just make things worse for himself and that that no one's going to believe what a scum villain has to say anyway. The biggest example of this is when Luo Binghe returns from the abyss demanding answers for why his beloved teacher betrayed him; Shen Qingqiu could have easily solved a lot of problems by simply admitting the truth - that he deeply regrets his actions and feels immense guilt about it every single day - but instead keeps silent, believing that it's pointless to defend his actions and that doing so will just make Binghe angrier.

His adaptability is also a double-edged sword; while he's good at coming up with short-term solutions to ensure his survival, he's pretty much blind to the long term consequences his actions cause. So much of his motivations are based on fearing for his life that he simply doesn't have the time or energy to slow down and think things through when it really matters. Even he admits in the future that he could have come up with much better ways of convincing Binghe to enter the abyss instead of just shoving him in; however, in the moment, he simply resigns himself to playing the role of the villain and convinces himself that he's doing what's necessary for Binghe to get stronger and reach his full potential. Furthermore, his genre-savviness - a very helpful tool in surviving day to day - bites him hard in the ass in the long term. He assumes that all the characters he meets follow their original characterization and plotlines in PIDW, leading to many misconceptions over motivations down the road. This is especially true when it comes to his relationship with Luo Binghe; despite being far kinder to him than the original Shen Jiu to the point where Binghe falls head over heels, Shen Qingqiu is convinced that Binghe still wants to horribly murder him for his betrayal and interprets all of his attempts to reconcile - such as warm smiles, offering him his robe, asking for his trust - as thinly veiled threats.

This is because while Shen Qingqiu is intelligent enough to successfully pass as the leader of a peak of scholars, he has the EQ of a sack of rocks. This is a guy who read all 1000+ chapters of a novel he absolutely despises and memorized enough details to put even the author to shame, proving two things about him: one, that when he commits to something - be it a goal or a person or an idea - he commits. And two, that he's very, very, very bad at being honest about his feelings, be it towards himself or others. He tries to rationalize any strong (non-fear based) emotions he feels as simply pragmatism. Risk his life saving Liu Qingge from qi deviation? It's because he needs a bodyguard! Spend most of his time nurturing and supporting Luo Binghe to the point where they're barely ever seperated? He doesn't want to be killed in the future by him, after all! He's so deep in denial over having emotions that during the three years after he pushes Binghe into the abyss, even total strangers can tell he's in mourning and describe him as a grieving widow - and yet Shen Qingqiu refuses to acknowledge these feelings at all, instead telling himself that the only reason he's been avoiding Qing Jing peak where so many memories of Luo Binghe reside is because he wants to do as much traveling as he can before the protagonist returns to murder him. If running away from your feelings was an Olympic sport, he would be winning gold and setting world records every single year.

This reluctance to admit his emotions means that he's also incredibly oblivious to the effect he has on others and their own feelings towards him. Because the thing is that despite thinking of himself as just an unlucky sod trying to survive, Shen Qingqiu cares about people a lot and it shows through his actions. He throws himself in front of Luo Binghe and takes a mortal blow for him despite knowing that the protagonist can't be killed off. He's willing to stake his life on defeating Sha Hualing in order to protect his students even though he's only recently stopped thinking of them as NPCs. He gives himself up to be humiliated and imprisoned because he doesn't want his fellow Cang Qiong peak lords to get into a fight over his sake. It isn't that he has a martyr complex - he's still willing to push Luo Binghe down the abyss to save his own life, after all - but despite his insistence that his main priority is his own survival, Shen Qingqiu's first instinct will always be to throw himself into harm's way in order to protect those he cares about. Unfortunately, his inability to recognize his own soft heart and the effect his kindness has on others means that he's often left bewildered when it turns out that people amazingly...seem to genuinely care about him even though he's the scum villain of the story? This total obliviousness can lead to him inadvertently and unknowingly hurting people through his actions because he doesn't realize the impact he has on them. The worst example of this is when he kills himself in order to save Luo Binghe without telling anyone that he actually has a back-up body in case of his demise. He sacrifices his life for his student who's been in love with him for years in front of his equally devoted fellow peak lords...and yet somehow thinks that everyone will simply move on after his death and be happier without having to deal with his issues. It's not that he's apathetic towards their feelings - he's absolutely horrified when he realizes the devastation left in the wake of his death - he just genuinely cannot comprehend that anyone would care about him to this extent until it's literally shoved into his face.

To be fair, most of these terrible decisions stem from life-threatening circumstances where he's too busy panicking to think things through. On a normal day, Shen Qingqiu is honestly exactly what he presents himself as - a kind-hearted if fussy scholar with a mischieveious sense of humor and a tendency towards laziness. He enjoys teasing people - a remnant of his days of trolling on the internet - and is prone to whining and overdramatics when he thinks no one's watching. The persona of 'Shen Qingqiu, dignified peak lord' is actually much less of a facade than even he's aware of - there's a reason why he no longer refers to himself by his original name Shen Yuan even in his own thoughts. He really isn't as good an actor as he thinks he is; all of the other peak lords very quickly realized that this is a very different person from the original Shen Qingqiu and suspect major memory loss, but agree not to bring it up because they vastly prefer the new version.

Also, he's like a huge monster nerd. He's super nerdy in general - he fanboys hard over cool people doing cool shit and will absolutely hurl himself into danger in order to check out anything that sparks his curiosity - but he especially loves learning about monsters.
